Throughout history towns and cities have been a focus of tourist activity providing accommodation, entertainment and other facilities for visitors. The structure of the Grand Tour, for example, was determined to a great extent by the location of Europe's culturally significant cities, while other towns and cities of historical or cultural importance have long attracted visitors. However, although much of the world's tourism activity occurs in urban settings, from major capital cities to coastal resorts, it is only recently that urban tourism has been identified as a significant sector of tourism worthy of academic attention.
