The analysis of global trends in crime over time is handicapped even more than cross-sectional comparisons by a lack of reliable data. The Interpol data on police-recorded crime go back to 1950 but cannot be reliably used to analyze trends for the reasons discussed in Chapter 2. International trend data based on crime victimization surveys are available only since the inception of the International Crime Victim Surveys in 1988.
