Introducing the ICVS

As discussed above, the International Crime Victims Survey will be used here as the principal source of information on the level of common crime across countries (also referred to as volume crime). Most of the data used are from the 1996, 2000, and 2005 sweeps of the ICVS. Where appropriate, data from other sources, such as from official police administrations, will be added on an ad hoc basis. In this chapter, the focus will be on frequently occurring property crimes. Violent crimes will be the topic of the next chapter.
