Theory, Culture & Society caters for the resurgence of interest in culture within contemporary social science and the humanities. Building on the heritage of classical social theory the book series examines ways in which this tradition has been reshaped by a new generation of theorists. It also publishes theoretically informed analyses of everyday life, popular culture, and new intellectual movements.

These go first to my late father who introduced me to the pleasure of both playing and watching sport and to my son George who has continued the family tradition by playing competitive sport and enthusiastically supporting Arsenal Football Club. Then to colleagues and postgraduate and undergraduate students at the Universities of Sheffield, Auckland, and Portsmouth respectively who provided me with valuable opportunities to discuss my work on sport and offered helpful comments and criticisms as it progressed. I greatly value my longstanding association with the journal Theory, Culture & Society and it is appropriate that my research on modern sport and the culture of celebrity should be published in the TCS book series.

Finally I would like to express my gratitude to Chris Rojek for his editorial support and encouragement with this project and to Kay Bridger, Mila Steele and Ian Antcliff for their assistance with the publication process.
