Working with Community
Working with Community
The nation's schools must improve education for all children, but schools cannot do this alone. More will be accomplished if schools, families, and communities work together to promote successful students.
What Is a Family?
In the opening chapter, we described school as a place where students come with their embodiments of race, sex, gender, socioeconomic class, and ability/disability. They also come with more—their families.
Families come with their children to school. Even when they do not come in person, families come in children's minds and hearts and in their hopes and dreams. They come with the children's problems and promise. Without exception, teachers and administrators have explicit or implicit contact with their students' families every day. (Epstein, 2011, p. 4)
