Solution-Focused Brief Therapy
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy
Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) is a future-orientated and goal-directed model of brief therapy that was developed in the early 1980s by Steve de Shazer, Insoo Kim Berg and colleagues. SFBT is often short-term but not always time-limited. In practice SFBT pays close attention to the language used in therapy to help draw out the competence, skills and personal attributes of the person to help them overcome difficulties in their life. SFBT techniques encourage the person to increase the frequency of their problem-solving behaviour at an individual and family systems level.
To read more on the philosophical underpinnings of SFBT and the brief problem-solving model, have a look at the work of Watzlawick et al. (1974).
