Changes in the health care system and the practice of nursing are astonishing. At times we hardly recognize ourselves or our profession. As a result, we are concerned, frustrated, and angry about many important issues. Short staffing, floating, use of unlicensed personnel, increased acuity of patients, increased responsibility, decreased respect, autonomy and job security, managed care obstacles, compromised patient care, and a change of focus from patients to profits are all taking their toll. Nurses everywhere are experiencing a crisis of personal and professional identity, often feeling powerless, due to low status in the hierarchy and yet responsible for handling many of the problems in the health care system. ...
