The Language Experience Approach
The Language Experience Approach (LEA) is based on the principle that instruction should begin with the background experiences and knowledge of the learner. It uses the learner's background, vocabulary, and syntax to generate reading material that is relevant and therefore likely to be both accessible and pleasurable. The LEA can be used with learners of all ages. In one variation of the LEA, students experience a phenomenon together. This can be an outing or event such as a field trip, party, fire drill, and so on or an observation of an object, photo, painting, or other visual image.
