Interpersonal guilt occurs when people feel bad because their behavior has affected a partner in some negative way. Frequently, people use guilt trips to try to make a partner feel guilty for some relational transgression (Tangney 1992). What makes this interesting is that the very act of inducing guilt may itself have negative relational consequences (Vangelisti & Sprague, 1998). Yet most people will probably admit to risking these consequences to make someone feel guilty. Thus it is important to understand how and why guilt messages are used and what ramifications those messages have for the partners and the relationship.
