In the higher-order urban centers of India, the concepts of ‘gay’ and ‘lesbian’ are recently gaining visibility. These are often new—sometimes confining, sometimes liberating—labels for older patterns of same-gender sexuality. Popular discourse and the Internet are making a considerable contribution to the development of new spaces where sexuality-identities, particularly those of gay men, are being developed and expressed. Transnational movements of people, commodities and consumption patterns are contributing to the increased visibility of a nascent gay population in India. However, few empirical studies examine male homosexualities in South Asian countries, particularly India, outside the context of public health (HIV/AIDS, STDs and so forth).
