Concluding Remarks

Schools are under considerable pressure to expand their capacity to meet a whole array of student needs. While these needs are very legitimate, schools and districts face a formidable challenge to meet them. The purpose of this book is to provide clear, well-documented steps for developing a proactive schoolwide discipline plan. Our approach is based on a simple assumption: If students are reasonably well behaved and the school environment is essentially positive, educators will teach better and students will learn more. By contrast, if discipline problems abound, teachers and administrators will spend more time and energy addressing behavior and less time teaching, and students will learn less.
