Boys and Literacy: Gendering the Reading Curriculum
This chapter draws on case study research funded by the ESRC under the heading ‘Fact and Fiction: the gendering of reading in the 7–9 age group’.1 The project was designed to throw light on boys' development as readers. Gender differences in reading are well documented: boys do less well at reading than girls, a discrepancy which begins early and intensifies with age; they also read less than girls; they read more non-fiction.
