The growing connections between media, culture and religion are increasingly evident in contemporary society, but until now have rarely been theoretically linked. The contributors to this volume effectively combine these areas into a coherent whole. The issues they examine include: the decline of religious institutions during the late twentieth century; the increasing autonomy and individualized practice of religion; and the surge of media and media-based icons that are often imbued with religious qualities, and the ensuing effect on cultural practices.

All contributions to this volume center on mediated religion. They have taken the lead set in our introduction by understanding their project within the framework of media, religion, and culture. During the course of the book, there has emerged an integration of these elements into an understanding of mediated religion in culture.
In this spirit, the bibliographic chapter by Clark and Hoover broke new ground by unequivocally replacing an understanding of mediated religion as religious messages transported by mass media to people, with a cultural interpretation of religious or sacred symbolism as shaped by the mediation itself.
