6.1 Introduction

Beyond pure theoretical and conceptual-type research, data are essential – regardless of whether you are conducting qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods research. Data can come in small or large quantities. Data can range from rich interviews and survey data from a single case study to patterns across multiple cases to a large archival dataset involving a significant number of observations.
