This chapter is based on seminar papers given at the Institute of Education, University of London as part of the Progress in Geography: Changing Viewpoints module for the MA Geography in Education. The changing nature of physical geography over the last century is briefly considered as a context for a more detailed examination of the changes in one area of applied physical geography the management of river systems.
