We started this book by thinking about the origins of depression and how far back in evolution we could detect it. The answer seems to be that the potential to tone down positive affect and tone up negative affect goes back a very long way. These potential brain states have evolved because they are part of the way animals defend themselves from various types of threat and harm. So our explorations into depression have examined depression as a form of threat-sensitivity and protection.
