Illustrative Example 1: Consultation in Bullying and Mobbing Prevention in the Workplace

Bullying and mobbing are common phenomena in all types of workplace settings (Sperry, 2009b). While bullying and mobbing in schools are clearly problems, particularly among students (Felix & Furlong, 2008), they are also a major workplace concern for most organizations (Fox & Stallworth, 2009). Beyond the harm to the victims of bullying and mobbing (e.g., health and psychological maladies), these forms of abusiveness cost organizations large sums of dollars due to events such as medical costs and absenteeism (Ferris, 2009). Consultants can play a significant role in working with organizations to prevent these forms of abusiveness (Sperry, 2009a), thus creating a more respectful workplace.
