From rational to complex work

The objective of this chapter is to offer a dialectical theory about the evolution of social roles.1 Long-term change can be viewed as a composite of two contending forces that shape the way in which knowledge is embedded in activity. For want of better terms, we call these forces the processes of (a) rationalization and (b) complexification. Both processes influence the way in which social life is constructed. And a shift in the relative importance of these forces recently occurred. In this chapter we ask: How are work roles changing as we enter the post-industrial era?
