In the decade of the 1970s, two intergovernmental inspired initiatives heralded internationally important developments in school physical education, which bore widespread political significance in standard setting policy principles: the Council of Europe's European Sports Charter, adopted by Ministers responsible for Sport at their first conference in 1975 under the title of European Sport for All Charter (Council of Europe, 1975); and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation's (UNESCO) Charter for Physical Education and Sport (UNESCO, 1978) adopted in 1978 at the 20th session of the General Conference in Paris.
