Despite my two Master's, I had not got a job in London, not through want of trying but I felt sure, because of my disability. Most jobs need speech and my speech was not the world's best. It goes without saying that I would have preferred a BBC accent.

It was a warm September morning in 2006. I was ensconced in London, in my flat in Pimlico. I was half asleep, half awake. It was an unearthly hour in the morning when I heard a message on the voice mail. I could not believe what I heard.
