Political Elites, the State and Categories of Knowledge
This chapter explores the capacity of the state to regulate news information flows in a variety of ways, and the practices of political élites in attempting to direct information in particular directions. The previous chapter distinguished between two dimensions of power, the instrumental and the structural. It was suggested that in order to draw a comprehensive picture of the ways in which news information flows were sustained and controlled, it was necessary to explore not only the deliberate (instrumental) exercise of proprietorial power and managerial authority within the newsroom but also the way in which market structures and economic pressures constrained and defined how news information was commodified.
