Media function theories: Time for a rethink

At the root of the Western ‘free media’ model is the Libertarian Media Function Theory that says the media should be the peoples’ ‘watchdog’ of government's abuse of power. This theory forms what is called the Four Theories of the Press, which was developed after the Second World War and articulated in 1956 by three American professors of communication: Fred S. Siebert, Theodore Peterson and Wilbur Schramm. This has for more than half a century defined the role of journalism and the media across the world with its all-encompassing media function theories of libertarian, authoritarian, social responsibility and communist models.
