In this final chapter we briefly review the evidence presented in the earlier part of the book. We then look at the implications for these findings for today's comprehensive schools, noting that one of the twin principles which led to their creation in the first place, the desire to maximize individual potential, has been somewhat forgotten amid the current emphasis on test outcomes and targets. Following on from this discussion we develop the argument that teachers, in coping with the negative aspects of the current ‘performance’ culture, need to foster a spirit of ‘resilience’ in their pupils.
