On August 21, 1996, Dennis Rodman, an African American basketball player with the National Basketball Association (NBA), created a media event that shut down the daily fast-paced movement of New York City for a few hours when he showed up to his book signing in a horse-drawn carriage, wearing a white wedding gown and escorted by female “usherettes” dressed in tuxedos.
