As young people progress through school, potentially the most difficult and sensitive challenge they face is establishing their sexual identity. This is true for everyone, but particularly so for any young person who is perceived as being different from the heterosexual norm. This chapter focuses on sexuality and its potential relationship to equality in schools, mainly on how homophobic attitudes might impact on students’ experience of school and their ability to benefit from their education. We consider the ways in which school leaders might promote policy and practice to ensure equality, and to establish an ethos where all students are equally valued, irrespective of their sexuality.
