Education policy forms the framework within which schools act to increase equality. Practitioners want policy to be a support to their efforts and some believe it is working in this way. Others believe the contrary: that public policy is limiting or even working counter to their intentions. This chapter focuses on the policies in the UK and more widely to explore the policy landscape in which schools work. The overall aim of the chapter is to enable you to understand better the policy freedoms and restrictions within which school leaders and teachers aspire to promote greater equality.
