Introduction
The concept of leadership is complex and evolving. Most of what is written about leadership draws on western culture, particularly that of North America. However, leadership is likely to be viewed differently in different cultures: ‘there remains much to learn about cultural understandings of leadership. Administrative textbooks rarely touch upon the expectations that culture creates for leaders’ (Bryant, 1998, p. 7).
Hofstede (1980; 1991) has conducted extensive research on the relative importance of the following variables in a range of cultures:
- Individualism, individual autonomy versus responsibility to the group.
