Guanxi
Guanxi

Essentially referring to relationships and personal connections, guanxi is a central concept in Chinese society and one that Western organisations who operate there are increasingly encouraged to explore, understand and utilise. Part of the concept dates back to ancient philosophies and societal mores regarding respect for others and for the structure of society itself, as reflected in the roles in which an individual functions in relation to other people.

It is essentially concerned with networking and contacts, which are built up over time through mutual respect and integrity and frequent contact. In this sense, business in China is far more reliant on trusted individual relationships than the more commercially driven, cost effective concerns of the Western model.
