Public affairs is one of the key disciplines in public relations, alongside media relations, financial public relations and public relations(internal). Public affairs is concerned with addressing the political publics defined as one of the six key publics by Haywood (alongside customers, investors, neighbours, business partners and staff). Neighbours and local communities are also often classified as being a core target for public affairs.

Organisations in heavily regulated sectors sometimes regard public affairs as being a more critical than marketing.
