What is Stress?

Stress is a difficult concept to define. Different people are likely to have differing explanations of what stress feels like to them. Furthermore, researchers may define the concept differently from lay people. The definition of stress as the negative emotional experience and tension that arise when an individual is faced with a stressor and he or she feels unable to cope is perhaps the most commonly used today. It is based on transactional models of stress which consider stress as an appraisal process.
