A criterion-referenced assessment is where criteria are specified for learner performance at different levels. Learners who show that they have demonstrated competence in each of the criteria achieve success in the domain being assessed, regardless of the performance of others similarly assessed.

Criterion-referenced scores are sometimes referred to as levels, which may be defined in terms of specific competencies that are expected of learners.
