Picking up on some of the themes developed in his critically acclaimed book Understanding Audiences (SAGE), this new book on audience research focuses on qualitative methods and will draw upon students’ own media experience. Structured around contemporary topics, including celebrity and reality TV, Investigating Audiences is designed with the needs of lecturers and students in mind. The book is divided into chapters that deal with audience research in terms of concepts and topics. Introduction
This book began by situating audience research as a subdiscipline of communications studies. I further claimed that the task at hand is not to solve the problem of audiences, but rather to unravel the things that we think we know about relations between people and media. Statements about the damage media inflict on the young illustrated gaps in commonsense views of what media do. It feels appropriate to revisit these questions in this concluding chapter, which explores the everyday life of media technologies through a project that I am currently struggling with.
