Linguistic Atlas projects yield large masses of data. As we have argued elsewhere (Schneider 1988; Kretzschmar 1992, fc), traditional analysis of this data has tended to be subjective and open to influence by the interests and experience of the analyst; statistics may provide better means for an objective and exhaustive analysis of databases made from the surveys. To apply statistical analyses reliably, however, the data must satisfy certain conditions with respect to sampling procedures, the structure of the database, and a few other criteria.
