In the previous chapter, we outlined the reasons why local-level development (sometimes referred to as grassroots-level community development) should be the development priority of international social work, while accepting that social workers are and should be involved at all other levels and dimensions of the development field. In this chapter, after exploring further the meaning of local-level development, our focus is on the most common programs and strategies found in local-level development within developing countries, while acknowledging that very similar approaches are used, albeit less frequently, in developed countries.
