Migration of people from India to different parts of the world is not a new phenomenon. Today, when we look at the demographic map of the world, there is hardly any country which does not have the presence of people of Indian origin (PIO). According to estimates there are over 30 million PIO and Non-Resident Indians (NRI) living in various parts of the world, particularly in the Gulf countries, Africa, West Indies, South and South-east Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. In some countries they comprise a considerable percentage of the total population (e.g., Mauritius, Singapore, and Fiji) while in others they belong to a microscopic minority.
