I hadn't been in the Vale Road School very long when my friends and I were invited to join the Girl Guides. It was a postal company, a special form of guiding. A scrapbook was sent to us once a month. It contained quizzes and items to tick off for roll-call and inspection. Some activities were written on coloured cards in envelopes, which were stuck on the pages of the book. It took about two hours to do everything. It must have taken a long time to prepare these books each month. There were labels with our names on so we could pass the books on to the next guide in the company.
