I felt very proud of having gained five ‘O’ levels and an A-level in English. My success with my Brownies and disabled Rangers unit gave me the confidence to apply for a Teacher's Training course. Encouraged by friends, I applied to four colleges.

On February 1st 1973 I had an interview at the first college I had chosen. I found it quite easily. It was a new building. I had an appointment with the Vice-principal, Miss Bailey. As I had a disability I needed to seek her approval before meeting the interview panel. Her secretary met me in the carpark.
