The media play an important role for a co-victim in the aftermath of a homicide. Whether the media covers the event will have serious consequences for the co-victim, given that the actions of the media have the power to turn private grief into a public spectacle. The quality and the quantity of media coverage can be helpful or hurtful to the co-victim, often both simultaneously.
Historically, the media's view of murder is defendant driven. This perspective, similar to that of the criminal justice system, is reflected in the pictorial representation of victims as anonymous body bags or splotches of blood on the street, rather than as real people.
