Cancer Screening
Following heart disease, cancer is the leading cause of death in older people. Fifty percent of all documented cancer cases occur in 11% of the population over age 65 (Parker, Tong, Bolden, & Wingo, 1996). Among women, one half who develop breast or oral cancer are over age 65; in men, 80% of all cancer of the prostate occurs in older people (Parker et al., 1996). Early detection of cancer is an important clinical strategy in the health promotion efforts of older people, augmenting efforts to reduce morbidity and mortality in this group.
