    Preface

This text is the result of 2 years of the development of the state of the science regarding health promotion issues for older people. Special emphasis has been placed on vulnerable groups, including the minority elderly and women, and on modifiable risk factors for chronic illness and debilitation in older people, such as smoking, obesity, and sedentary lifestyles. The content is organized to delineate clearly the health risks of the elderly and health promotion efforts for the elderly. What we have presented is the state of the science in terms of what is known about risks in the elderly and what is known about the efficacy of interventions in health promotion for the elderly. We have included information concerning the health issues relevant to minorities, including the issue of poverty. We have discussed theoretical models employed in the development of health promotion interventions, their merits and weaknesses. In addition, the issue of community-based intervention models and community empowerment for the elderly is discussed. These elements are not included in other health promotion texts, and they represent a significant strength in this one. We have discussed issues surrounding vitamin supplementation, use of alternative supplements for hormone replacement, and the issue of cardiovascular risk reduction in the older person. These are issues on which the clinician needs timely and relevant information.

    About the Authors

Colleen Keller, R.N., PhD, is Professor in the Department of Family Care Nursing at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio. Her research has focused on reduction of cardiovascular risk factors in women of diverse ethnic backgrounds, with an emphasis on obesity and sedentary activity as particular risk behaviors. She has received funding from the American Heart Association, Sigma Theta Tau, and the American Nurses’ Foundation. Keller maintains a clinical practice at an inner-city clinic, providing primary care to underserved individuals. She has participated on national committees for the American Heart Association's Council on Cardiovascular Nursing and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

Julie Fleury, R.N., PhD, is Associate Professor in the Department of Adult and Geriatric Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research has included development and refinement of the middle range well-ness motivation theory, instrument development and testing, and the creation and testing of theory-based interventions designed to promote secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Much of her work has focused on the cultural and contextual relevance of motivational concepts and measures, particularly in older, underserved populations. Her recently funded NINR/National Institutes of Health study, “Motivation in the Maintenance of Physical Activity,” is a multisite, community-based study that includes as predictors of regular physical activity evaluation of cultural context, self-knowledge in goal formation, the appraisal of readiness, and self-regulation. Fleury currently serves as codirector for the Intervention Core of the Center for Research on Chronic Illness at the School of Nursing, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has participated on national committees for the American Association of Critical Care Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, and the American Heart Association's Council on Cardiovascular Nursing.
