This book helps content-area teachers develop a clear understanding of the the Common Core State Standards for Reading and Writing in History/Social Studies, Science, and the Technical Subjects Giouroukakis and Connolly provide sample CCSS-based content-area lessons from real teachers in the field. Their in-depth analysis of these lessons will help educators develop their own CCSS-aligned subject-specific lessons.

Reading Lessons in Science and Technical Subjects
In this chapter, we present three science and technical subject lessons that we believe are particularly effective for addressing the CCSS for Reading. These lessons involve many reading and writing skills and thus address the majority of the CCSS. However, we have designated each lesson according to the CCSS Reading strands that it addresses most fully:
- Key Ideas and Details: Grades 11–12, “Bonus Science Articles”
- Craft and Structure: Grades 9–10, “Vocabulary Videos”
- Integration of Knowledge and Ideas: Grades 6–8, “Continental Drift”
In the first lesson, students read and answer text-based questions on timely science articles. They must develop a strong understanding of the development of ideas within the articles in order to be successful.
