Communication and Health
The preceding four chapters insightfully examine several important ways that communication influences the health of women. These chapters build upon a large body of research that illustrates the pervasive roles that communication performs in defining health and delivering health care (see reviews of the health communication research literature in Jackson & Duffy, 1998; Kreps, 1988a, 2001). The literature shows that, through formative everyday communication, we learn about what is and what is not healthy, shaping health beliefs (Kreps & Kunimoto, 1994). Communication is also the primary process we use to seek and offer health care (Jones, Kreps, & Phillips, 1995; Kreps, 1988b).
