My seminar students have expressed surprise that “so much” conceptual and empirical material can be applied to the analysis of friendship. In doing so, they implicitly acknowledge that people take friendship more or less for granted. No doubt, if we were asked, most of us readily could cite numerous benefits of friendship, with social and emotional support heading the list. But everyday life offers few chances to analyze friendship; we are more likely to interact socially with little thought about friendship than to engage in abstract inquiry about it.
