The physical and sexual abuse of women is probably the most politically and emotionally charged topic within family studies. It is not surprising, then, that our impressive progress in understanding wife abuse has nevertheless been marked by numerous controversies. Although a great deal of important research has been conducted by mainstream social scientists, this is an area of study in which feminist scholarship has been critically important. The issue of wife abuse was brought to public consciousness by the women's movement. The shelter movement has begun to offer women alternatives to violence, and feminist activists and researchers have contributed importantly to our understanding of the problem.
