One of the struggles, and indeed one of the sources of intellectual excitement in women's studies, is the critical dialogue that feminist scholars create within the various traditional disciplines. These dialogues are not debates between outsiders and insiders; they are, rather, critical confrontations among those who have been educated and trained within particular disciplines. The feminist debate arises because some of those insiders, who are women, are outsiders. When women realize that we are simultaneously immersed in and estranged from both our own particular discipline and the Western intellectual tradition generally, a personal tension develops that informs the critical dialogue.
