How do gay men respond to controlling notions of masculinity in society and stereotypes of gay sexuality? This book explores the ways in which gay men in the United States engage in, contest and modify these notions and develop a sense of masculine identity. The book examines the creation of identity through the everyday lives of gay men: their work; home; community; and relationships.

On a cool May evening in the city of Santa Ana, California,1 approximately 50 Latino men boarded a bus for a weekend-long retreat in the Southern California mountain resort of Big Bear Lake. The congregation of men may have attracted the attention of casual onlookers, but the men themselves probably seemed nondescript in this predominantly Latino city. Yet this was not a usual gathering: These Latino men were meeting to confront and discuss the challenges in their lives as “gay Latino men.”

This chapter utilizes data collected during two retreats, or encuentros (encounters), organized by the Entre Hombres (Between Men) program of Santa Ana's Delhi Center (a Latino community service organization). The weekend ...
