The focus in this chapter is on the symbolic importance of food and eating, and its role in constructing individuals’ identities. Here, food and eating are explored in terms of their cultural significance as opposed to their nutritional importance. The chapter also explores the multiple and shifting meanings food and eating have in human lives. Finally, religion, ethnicity, ethical consumerism, class, gender and children's agency in relation to food and eating are considered, including a discussion of children's sweet-eating.
