Throughout the ages, disordered eating amongst men has been evident. During the height of the Roman Empire for example, wealthy men ate until their stomachs bulged and then visited a vomitarium to make room for the next course. Today, their behaviour would definitely be described as bulimic.
The first case studies of anorexia in males were reported between 1689 and 1790. In 1689, Richard Morton described the very first case of male anorexia as ‘nervous consumption’.
