Kallahti Comprehensive School is a typical suburban public school in Helsinki, Finland. Kallahti serves 560 students from Grades 1 to 9, more than 45 percent of whom are from immigrant-background homes. The school is the workplace for 55 teachers, 6 of whom are special education teachers. I went to visit the school because I wanted to find out how this school serves children who have special educational needs. While there, I visited three special education classes, each with 10 students, each led by a special education teacher and supported by one or two trained assistants (there were four assistant teachers in this school).
