Planning Theory of Communication: Goal Attainment Through Communicative Action
Many communication theorists agree that communication is a tool for achieving goals: it is purposive. Even when people talk for the sake of talking, they are probably using communication to achieve a goal. In this case the goal might be to relieve boredom. People use both words and actions to accomplish such goals as persuading, entertaining, and informing others. The Planning Theory of communication seeks to explain how individuals arrive at an understanding of each other's goal-directed actions and discourse, and how individuals produce actions and discourse that enable them to attain their everyday goals.
